Installation

FELIXXRT is a router OS that you install on a PC from a USB stick. Installing erases everything on the target disk.

Requirements

Item Details
CPU x86_64 (64-bit Intel or AMD)
Network Two or more wired NICs (the first becomes WAN, the second LAN). With only one NIC, the router starts with LAN only. Wireless NICs are not used
Memory and disk Tested with 2 GB of memory and a 16 GB disk
Firmware UEFI (Secure Boot may stay enabled) or BIOS (legacy)
USB stick Large enough for the ISO (its contents are erased)
Screen and keyboard Needed for the first setup (First setup)

The target disk is completely erased after you confirm. Back up anything you need first. Disconnecting disks you want to keep is the safest option.

1. Download the ISO

  1. Save the ISO (felixxrt-<version>-amd64.iso) from Download.
  2. Check that the SHA256 of the file matches the value on that page.
sha256sum felixxrt-<version>-amd64.iso

On Windows, run Get-FileHash .\felixxrt-<version>-amd64.iso in PowerShell.

2. Write it to a USB stick

Write the ISO image to the USB stick as-is (copying the file onto the stick does not make it bootable).

  • Windows: use a writing tool such as Rufus. If Rufus asks for the write mode, choose DD Image.
  • macOS and Linux: use a tool such as balenaEtcher, or dd.
sudo dd if=felixxrt-<version>-amd64.iso of=/dev/sdX bs=4M status=progress conv=fsync

/dev/sdX is the USB stick. Double-check it: the wrong device name erases another disk.

3. Boot from the USB stick

  1. Insert the USB stick into the PC that will become the router and power it on.
  2. Choose the USB stick in the boot menu (F12, F11, Esc and so on, depending on the model).
  3. The FELIXXRT menu appears. Wait 5 seconds on Install FELIXXRT (erases the selected disk), or press Enter.

4. Install

The installer asks only one thing: whether it may erase the disk. Language, time, partitions and everything else are set automatically.

  1. When asked to confirm writing to the disk, choose Yes.
  2. The rest runs by itself. It takes about 5 minutes and then reboots automatically.
  3. After the reboot you can remove the USB stick.

The installation does not use the network. Everything it needs is on the ISO.

If the USB stick is still inserted when the PC restarts

Firmware What happens
UEFI The USB menu detects the installed disk and selects Boot from the disk automatically. After 10 seconds, FELIXXRT starts from the disk
BIOS The menu still defaults to Install FELIXXRT. Choose Boot from the disk within 5 seconds

If you miss it on BIOS and the installer starts, it stops at the erase confirmation. Nothing is erased unless you choose Yes there. Power off, remove the USB stick and start again.
